Mr Jambulingam is a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in Upper GI / laparoscopic & weight loss surgery.  His practice is based in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and has been practising surgery since 1995.  He uses current surgical evidence in delivering excellence in surgical care with major emphasis in minimally invasive surgery.  He delivers upper GI cancer services and bariatric surgical service in a multidisciplinary setting providing the best care for his patients. He sees over 1000 patients and performs over 500 procedures per year.

Professional Background

Mr Jambulingam is a Consultant Surgeon at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.  He is the Clinical Lead for Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery.  He is the Lead clinician for Upper GI Cancers and Chair of the Upper GI Cancer MDT for the Trust.  He completed his higher surgical training in the West Midlands, at University Hospitals in North Staffordshire, Coventry & Warwickshire and Birmingham.  He spent a year in the Liver Transplantation Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he passed the intercollegiate specialty examination (FRCS) in 2004 and obtained the Certificate of completion of surgical training (CCST). He completed a year’s post CCST fellowship in OesophagoGastric and advanced laparoscopic surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.

He is trained in oesophago gastric cancer resections, laparoscopic cholecystectomy,  antireflux surgery, diaphragmatic hernia, inguinal & incisional hernia repair, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. His NHS practice reflects his subspecialty training in laparoscopic surgery.  His practice includes general surgery, weightloss surgery, benign and malignant GI surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery and hepatobiliary surgery.

He delivers bariatric surgical services at the Obesity Centre for research at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and enters his data regularly on the National Bariatric Surgery registry (NBSR).  He attended bariatric training courses in Hull, Taunton, Bruges in Belgium, UPMC - Pittsburgh and Rotterdam.  He is an experienced bariatric surgeon who performs insertion of intragastric balloons (Obera), Obalon, laparoscopic gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revisional bariatric surgery.  He was an invited speaker for the Sleeve gastrectomy course at IFSO, Montreal 2014.

His special interest is oesophago-gastric surgery which includes the management of acid reflux disease in the form of laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair, fundoplication, paraoesophageal hernia repair and achalasia cardia.  He has visited the Cancer Institute Hospital and the National Cancer centre in Tokyo and the Division of Thoracic and Foregut surgery at UPMC Pittsburgh on an AUGIS travelling Fellowship.   He performs minimally invasive oesophagectomies (MIO) and gastrectomies for cancers and for excision GIST tumors.

He performs laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs extra-peritoneally (TEPP) which facilitates treatment of all groin hernias (including Spigelian hernias) and incisional hernias. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including dilatations & insertion of stents and colonoscopy.

Educational Profile

Apart from surgery he has an interest in medical education.  He has completed his Post graduate Diploma in Medical Education at University of Cardiff.  He is a  Clinical and Educational supervisor for core and Specialty Trainees in general surgery. He is an examiner for the MBBS exams for UCL medical students.

He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and is an instructor for the Basic Surgical Skills (BSS), Higher Surgical Skills (HSS) and Care of the critically ill surgical patient (CRISP) courses.

Personal profile

Mr Jambulingam is married with two children and lives at St Albans.  He plays cricket regularly for the South Bedfordshire Doctors Cricket Club and for a local club at St Albans.  He is a keen Golfer and plays 18 holes over the weekends.  He listens to music and is a trained walking leader and continues this in his leisure time.
